The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed that the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise will kick off with online pre-registration starting August 18, 2025. This move comes as part of the commission’s preparations for the Anambra State governorship election scheduled for November 8, 2025, and the broader 2027 general elections.
The announcement was made by INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, during a courtesy visit by the National Orientation Agency (NOA) to INEC’s headquarters in Abuja.
“The nationwide continuous voter registration is scheduled to commence in about three weeks, with the online pre-registration of voters scheduled for the 18th of August,” Yakubu said.He further disclosed that physical (in-person) registration will begin a week later, ensuring both digital and offline accessibility for prospective voters.
Strengthening Stakeholder Collaboration and Voter Awareness
The meeting between INEC and NOA also served as an opportunity to reaffirm their partnership on critical areas such as voter education, public enlightenment, and the deployment of artificial intelligence (AI) tools to enhance electoral processes ahead of 2027.
Describing the engagement as part of INEC’s ongoing stakeholder strategy, Prof. Yakubu emphasised the pivotal role NOA plays in grassroots sensitisation and mobilising voter participation.
“I am particularly glad that this meeting is at the instance of the DG in furtherance of the longstanding partnership between INEC and the National Orientation Agency,” Prof. Yakubu stated.NOA Repositions for Deeper Democratic Impact
On his part, NOA Director-General, Malam Lanre Issa-Onilu, revealed that the agency is undergoing a major transformation aimed at making it more responsive to Nigeria’s evolving democratic needs.
He explained that the agency has revamped its outreach strategy, integrating traditional and digital platforms to drive civic engagement.
“We are deploying weekly newsletters, AI-driven feedback mechanisms, and leveraging our network of over 818 local offices nationwide to connect directly with the people,” Issa-Onilu explained.This renewed push for voter registration and civic education comes at a time when voter apathy and disinformation remain challenges in Nigeria’s democratic journey. By introducing AI tools and expanding digital outreach, INEC and NOA aim to bridge the gap between citizens and the electoral process, especially among youths and first-time voters. As Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general elections, such early and inclusive initiatives could play a significant role in boosting turnout and reinforcing electoral integrity.
