AON Lifts Lifetime Ban on Comfort Emmanson After Ministerial Appeal

The Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) has revoked the lifetime ban previously imposed on Comfort Emmanson—who had been barred from flying with any member airline after an unruly incident on an Ibom Air flight.

“Having considered all the circumstances … including the exhibition of remorse, the withdrawal of the complaint, the striking out of charges, and her release from custody … the AON hereby lifts the life ban placed on Ms Comfort Emmanson from flying with any AON-member airline for life.”

This decision came following an appeal from the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, who urged clemency given the mitigating circumstances.

Safety Training and Public Awareness

The AON also commended the federal government’s plans to conduct a retreat aimed at retraining Aviation Security (AVSEC) personnel and airline crews in handling disruptive passengers.

They called on aviation regulators to launch a public awareness campaign reinforcing that unruly behaviour poses serious risks and is punishable under Section 85 of the Civil Aviation Act, 2022, and Part 17 of the Nigeria Civil Aviation Regulations, 2023.

What Counts as Unruly Behaviour

The AON clarified that such misconduct includes, but is not limited to:

• Assaulting or threatening crew members
• Refusing to follow safety instructions
• Smoking in restricted areas
• Disorderly conduct or fighting
• Interfering with aircraft equipment
• Using electronic gadgets against crew directives

These actions empower pilots-in-command and AVSEC officers to restrain, disembark, and hand over disruptive passengers to competent authorities to ensure flight safety and order.

Additional Context & Insights

• Incident Details: Emmanson’s ban followed a widely viewed video capturing her confrontation with a flight attendant, which led to her arrest and subsequent remand.

• Legal Implications: The swift reversal of the ban and the dropping of criminal charges highlight how expressions of remorse, alongside procedural withdrawal can influence aviation disciplinary outcomes.

• Industry Impact: This case underscores a balancing act in Nigeria’s aviation sector: strict zero-tolerance policies versus pathways for redemption through demonstrated accountability.
