Super Eagles Coach Commends Tournament Standards

Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has commended the level of play at the ongoing 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), despite Nigeria’s 1-0 defeat to Senegal in their opening group match.

The tournament, which began last weekend, is designed exclusively for players plying their trade in their respective domestic leagues. The current edition is being co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda.

Nigeria Returns to CHAN After Absence

Nigeria’s Home Eagles are featuring in the competition for the first time since missing out on the last two editions. The team faced a tough start on Tuesday, falling narrowly to defending champions Senegal in a closely contested match.

Chelle Impressed by CHAN Intensity and Quality

Despite the loss, Chelle was full of praise for the general standard of play and the facilities provided by the host nations.

I am surprised about the intensity
There are a lot of good teams and a lot of quality
I think the pitches are very good, allowing for fast-paced and technical football
This would be a great CHAN competition

The Malian coach, who was appointed to lead Nigeria’s home-based squad in this tournament, predicted a successful outing for the event, highlighting the competitiveness and infrastructure as major positives.

Nigeria will now be aiming to bounce back in their next group fixture as they seek to advance in the prestigious biennial tournament.
