The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has issued a fresh warning that doctors across the country will down tools if the Federal Government fails to meet their demands before Tuesday, July 23.
NMA President, Prof. Bala Audu, confirmed this on Sunday, noting that the 21‑day ultimatum given to the government on July 2 is about to expire.
“If the government fails to address our demands, we may have no choice but to proceed with a strike,” he said.What sparked the standoff?
The dispute stems from a controversial circular by the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission (NSIWC) on revised allowances for medical and dental officers.
The NMA says the directive violates earlier agreements and undermines the welfare of health workers.
Prof. Audu revealed that the association has been holding discussions with top officials, including the Coordinating Minister of Health Prof. Muhammad Pate and Minister of State for Health Dr. Iziaq Salako, but a follow‑up meeting scheduled last week was postponed due to the funeral of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
“Time is running out. If this issue is not prioritised, a strike may be inevitable,” Prof. Audu warned.States also taking a stand
The NMA branch in Katsina State has equally condemned the circular. In a communiqué signed by Chairman Dr. Muhammadu Sani and Secretary Dr. Yahya Salisu, the branch urged the government to withdraw the directive immediately, warning that it could not guarantee uninterrupted health services if the matter is left unresolved.
With the clock ticking toward Thursday, Nigerians are waiting anxiously to see if talks will resume in time to avert a nationwide shutdown of medical services.
