Ego Boyo Clears Air On Exit From Acting

Veteran Nollywood Star Says She Left Because Acting Became Boring

Veteran Nollywood actress and producer Ego Boyo has debunked widespread assumptions that her husband was the reason she stopped acting.

In a recent interview with media personality Chude Jideonwo, Ego opened up about her decision to leave the acting scene, stating clearly that it was a personal choice based on her own shift in interests.

WHY I LEFT ACTING – BOYO SPEAKS

Speaking on Wednesday in a video clip from the interview, Ego explained that she gradually found more fulfilment behind the camera and transitioned into production.

She said:

“I left acting when I found out that I enjoyed producing more than acting It was boring The blogs wanted it to be something like my husband banned me from it they wanted it to be sensational and it was not”

CLARIFYING THE RUMOURS

The actress noted that while many were quick to create a scandalous narrative around her exit, the truth was far simpler. She stressed that the decision had nothing to do with any external pressure, particularly not from her husband.

FROM “CHECKMATE” TO MOVIE PRODUCTION

Ego Boyo, now aged 56, started her acting journey in the early 1980s. She rose to fame in the 1990s with her iconic role in the hit Nigerian TV series Checkmate. Over time, she shifted focus into film production where she has remained active.

Though she stepped away from acting at the height of her fame, her contribution to the industry continues through her work behind the scenes.

Many veteran actors in Nigeria have transitioned into directing, producing, or mentoring younger talents, often citing similar reasons – the desire to have more control over storytelling and the entire creative process. Ego Boyo’s shift reflects this broader trend within Nollywood, where more experienced stars are building legacies beyond on-screen roles.
