Imam Abubakar Abdullahi, the revered cleric of Nghar village in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State, who gained national and international recognition for saving hundreds of Christians during violent communal clashes, has died at the age of 90.
The death was confirmed by his son, Saleh Abubakar, who told factshpere in Jos that the cleric passed away on Thursday night at the Plateau Specialist Hospital.
According to the family, Imam Abdullahi had been battling complications related to a heart condition for some time. He was initially diagnosed with a heart problem and had been on regular medical check-ups, but his health reportedly remained unstable following the diagnosis.
Imam Abdullahi is survived by 19 children 12 boys and seven girls.
The late cleric rose to global prominence in June 2018 during deadly, faith-based clashes that swept through about 10 villages in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area. At the height of the violence, he sheltered 262 Christians inside a mosque and his private residence, shielding them from attackers until the unrest subsided.
His courageous act of compassion and religious tolerance prevented the massacre of those under his protection and earned him widespread admiration both within Nigeria and internationally.
Imam Abubakar Abdullahi is remembered as a symbol of peace, humanity, and interfaith coexistence in a region long affected by communal violence.
