The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention NCDC has confirmed 11 new cases of Lassa fever recorded across three states namely Ondo Edo and Benue. This brings the total number of confirmed infections nationwide in 2025 to 811.
Rising Fatalities Compared to 2024
In its latest situation report for epidemiological week 28 released on Monday NCDC noted that 152 lives have so far been lost to the disease this year. That represents a case fatality rate CFR of 18.7 percent which is higher than the 17.3 percent recorded during the same period in 2024.
Widespread Infections But Five States Bear the Brunt
According to the report a total of 21 states across 105 local government areas have recorded at least one confirmed case. However five states remain the most affected contributing 89 percent of all confirmed infections. These include Ondo 32 percent Bauchi 23 percent Edo 17 percent Taraba 14 percent and Ebonyi 3 percent.
Younger Adults Most Affected
The data also showed that the most impacted age group is between 21 and 30 years with a median age of 30. The male to female case ratio stands at 1 to 0.8 indicating a slightly higher incidence in males.
Cases Declining But Caution Still Needed
Although the nation is seeing a general reduction in both suspected and confirmed Lassa fever cases compared to the same time last year health officials are urging the public to remain vigilant.
Coordinated Response Efforts Underway
NCDC emphasised that the national Lassa fever multi-partner multi-sectoral Technical Working Group TWG is actively coordinating response efforts across all levels to prevent further spread.
Understanding Lassa Fever
Lassa fever remains endemic in Nigeria and is primarily transmitted through exposure to food or household items contaminated with urine or faeces from infected rodents. The agency advises Nigerians to maintain proper hygiene and take necessary precautions to avoid rodent contact.
