The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has recorded a historic revenue milestone, generating ₦1.3 trillion in the first quarter of 2025—more than double the ₦600 billion collected during the same period in 2023. This remarkable achievement highlights the impact of government reforms, digital transformation, and strengthened enforcement under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
A blend of strategic policies and operational improvements has driven the NCS to this financial landmark. The agency has fortified its digital infrastructure, laying the groundwork for the $3.2 billion E-Customs Modernisation Project—a sweeping upgrade aimed at fully automating cargo processing, surveillance, and payment systems. Efficiency at major seaports such as Apapa and Tin Can has significantly improved, with clearance timelines for compliant importers reduced from 21 days to just 7–10 days.
The crackdown on smuggling has also played a crucial role, with the NCS recovering ₦64 billion in previously undervalued imports and dismantling smuggling networks across key border points including Seme, Idiroko, Katsina, and Sokoto. The Authorised Economic Operator (AEO) programme, which allows verified importers faster cargo processing, has further enhanced compliance and efficiency.
Additionally, the National Single Window Project has integrated various government agencies involved in trade clearance, streamlining procedures and boosting both transparency and revenue collection.
Looking ahead, the full implementation of the E-Customs Modernisation Project is expected to yield even greater returns. Experts estimate it could generate $250 billion over the next 20 years, transforming Nigeria’s customs operations and strengthening its role in global trade.
Efforts to diversify the economy through expanded exports—particularly in solid minerals and agricultural commodities—have begun to pay off. Exports in these sectors rose by 38% last year, significantly boosting Nigeria’s foreign exchange earnings.
The record-breaking revenue performance of the Nigeria Customs Service reflects the success of policy-driven reforms and technology-led administration. As Nigeria continues its economic transformation, stakeholders are optimistic about sustained growth in revenue generation and trade facilitation.
