The 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi, has expressed concern over the worsening poverty situation in Nigeria, attributing it to the country’s chronic leadership problems.
Speaking on Thursday, Obi highlighted the gravity of Nigeria’s economic challenges, stating that the country now has more impoverished citizens than China, Indonesia, and Vietnam combined despite these nations having far larger populations. He emphasized that this alarming reality reflects decades of failed governance and mismanagement.
Obi noted that while other developing nations have managed to lift millions out of poverty through deliberate policy choices and effective leadership, Nigeria continues to see more of its citizens fall below the poverty line.
He stressed that addressing poverty requires visionary leadership focused on economic reforms, investment in education, and robust infrastructure development, rather than short-term political gains.
Obi’s comments come at a time when Nigeria faces mounting economic pressure, with inflation and unemployment rates reaching historic highs.
