Good news for electricity users in Enugu State! The Enugu State Electricity Regulatory Commission (EERC) has reduced the electricity tariff for Band A customers from ₦209/kWh to ₦160/kWh. This new price will start on August 1, 2025.
The new rate was approved for MainPower Electricity Distribution Limited, the company now in charge of supplying power in Enugu. The update was shared in Order No. EERC/2025/003, titled “Tariff Order for MainPower Electricity Distribution Limited 2025.”
What This Means for You:
Band A customers will pay ₦160 per unit of electricity instead of ₦209.
The new price is based on the actual cost of supplying electricity, which includes government support (subsidy).
Other customers in Bands B, C, D, and E will continue to pay the same amount as before.
According to EERC Chairman, Chijioke Okonkwo, this price is fair and helps MainPower manage costs in case the government removes subsidies in the future.
“We made this change so that Band A users in Enugu can pay less for now. If the subsidy is removed later, MainPower will still be able to keep prices stable,” he explained.How EERC Will Monitor Service
To make sure customers get good service, the EERC says:
MainPower must publish daily updates on how many hours of power each Band A area receives.
If a Band A area gets poor supply for 2 days in a row, they must report it.
If the poor supply continues for 7 straight days, the area will be moved to a lower band.
What the Law Says
This change follows the Enugu State Electricity Law 2023, signed by Governor Peter Mbah. This law gives the state power to:
Control electricity supply and prices within Enugu.
Create its own electricity market separate from the federal government.
It also aligns with the Federal Electricity Act 2023, signed by President Bola Tinubu, which now allows all states in Nigeria to manage their own electricity services. Over 16 states have already started doing this.
