A Russian Antonov An‑24 passenger aircraft crashed on Thursday while approaching Tynda in Russia’s far east, killing all 48 people on board, officials confirmed.
The plane, operated by Angara Airlines, was carrying 42 passengers, including five children, and six crew members when it went off radar and struck a forested hill about 15 km from Tynda.
Investigation underway
Russia’s investigative authorities have opened a criminal case into suspected violations of air traffic and transport rules leading to multiple deaths.
President Vladimir Putin has been informed, and a federal commission has been set up to oversee the response.
Difficult rescue operation
Video from a helicopter showed the burning wreckage deep inside dense forest with smoke rising from the site.
Over 100 rescuers used heavy equipment to reach the location, while Governor Vasily Orlov declared three days of mourning and ordered flags at half‑mast.
Aircraft history and safety concerns
The crashed aircraft was built in 1976 during the Soviet era and had previously served under Aeroflot.
The Antonov An‑24, nicknamed “flying tractor,” is valued for its durability in Siberia’s harsh conditions, but maintenance costs have risen sharply since Western sanctions limited access to parts.
International reaction
Reports indicate at least one Chinese citizen was among the passengers, and President Xi Jinping has sent condolences to Russia.
Angara Airlines, based in Irkutsk, operates several aging An‑24s and had earlier sought an extension of their service life as new replacements are not expected before 2027.
