The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has dismissed widespread claims on social media that the National Assembly has approved the creation of new states.
During Tuesday’s plenary, Akpabio explained that while the Constitution Review Committee has received over 42 proposals for state creation, none has passed through the full legislative process.
He warned communities not to hold meetings or mobilise support for states that do not legally exist, stressing that no new state has been approved at any level.
Akpabio urged Nigerians to rely on official statements from the National Assembly on constitutional amendments and related issues, instead of circulating unverified reports.
Meanwhile, the Senate will hold a special session on Wednesday to honour former President Muhammadu Buhari, reflecting on his contributions to national development.
