Victims’ Families Reject Report Blaming Pilot for Jeju Air Crash

Families of those killed in last December’s Jeju Air crash have condemned a new investigation report that attributes the disaster to pilot error, saying it ignores other crucial factors that worsened the tragedy.

According to findings by South Korea’s Aviation and Railway Accident Investigation Board, the pilots mistakenly shut down the left engine which was functioning properly — instead of the right engine, which had been damaged by a bird strike moments before landing at Muan International Airport.


What Happened That Day

On 29 December, Jeju Air Flight 2216 reported a bird strike as it approached the runway and made a mayday call.
The crew attempted to land from the opposite direction, but video footage later showed the aircraft touching down on its belly — with landing gear not deployed — and then skidding into a concrete barrier.

Out of 181 people on board, only two survived, making it South Korea’s deadliest air disaster in decades.


Families Dispute Findings

Relatives argue the concrete barrier at the end of the runway played a significant role in the devastation.

⁠“The bereaved families seek a fair and transparent investigation into the accident,” they said in a joint statement, urging investigators to complete a full review before releasing any report.

The Jeju Air pilots’ union also criticised the findings, saying the investigation focused too narrowly on pilot judgement while downplaying airport infrastructure issues.


Infrastructure Under Scrutiny

In January, South Korea’s transport ministry promised to remove concrete barriers at seven airports, acknowledging safety concerns raised by the crash.
Meanwhile, families filed a criminal complaint in May against Jeju Air CEO Kim E‑bae and others, citing professional negligence. Police confirm that 24 individuals are currently under investigation.

A source close to the inquiry told Reuters that despite protests, the board would not alter its findings, citing “clear evidence and backup data.”
