Young man killed during cult initiation in Lagos community

A 26‑year‑old artisan identified as Timehin has been killed during cult initiation rites in the Awoyaya area of Eti‑Osa Local Government Area, Lagos State.

The incident occurred on July 18 when suspected members of a rival cult group ambushed the initiation ground late in the evening. Timehin had been taken into a nearby bush for initiation when the attackers stormed the scene and opened fire.

A family source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the initiators fled in confusion while Timehin could not escape. His lifeless body was later found near the UBA bus stop in Awoyaya. The family rushed him to the hospital, but he was confirmed dead on arrival.

Another community source revealed that Timehin had gunshot wounds on his neck and hand. According to the source, residents later discovered he had gone to the location for cult initiation, though police confirmation has not yet been obtained.

Efforts to reach CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, the state Police Public Relations Officer, were unsuccessful as calls and text messages were not answered at the time of filing this report.

This killing follows recent cult‑related violence in Lagos. On July 16, rampaging cultists hacked three residents—identified as Agbara, Butcher and an unnamed plumber—to death in Ebute Meta. In May, a clash between rival cult groups in Owode Ajegunle also left one person, known as Sparkle, dead.
